Taking a punt on Opendoorz!
Hip hip Hooray we were blessed with sunshine for our annual punting trip. Boating, Bubbles and BBQ were the order of the day…
Opendoorz members and their guests fought hard on recruiting local ‘chaps’ into their punts – why on earth might that be?? John Vaughan-Fowler and Dan Kitchen were soon standing strong with their mighty poles firmly between their fingers. And off they went… into the distance, leaving the beginners in their wake! Not to be deterred the remaining punts were manoeuvred (with a bit of help) to face the right direction (!) and they were soon chasing their tails.
Fuelled by a basket overflowing with fizz, beer, crisps and a nibble of chocolate everyone was suitably energized and maybe a little merry as they left the Victoria Arms for the homeward stretch and the promise of a BBQ
Despite proudly boasting at having had a lesson from the man at the ‘kiosk’ Sam Farmer provided entertainment as he rather splendidly took a nose dive and sunk to the bottom of the Cherwell! Oh did we shriek with laugher – that slick look sodden and soggy was a sight to behold. Maybe jumping between boats wasn’t such a good idea after all!
With the evening still balmy we sat at the water’s edge at The Cherwell Boathouse for a fabulous BBQ and riotously regaled our shanty stories… a bit of social networking is always entertaining after hard graft and a few beers!
Thanks to Mark Barclay who kindly donated a bottle of Whiskey for a game of ‘Tits and Tushs’ (sorry!) which raised a fabulous £206 for our chosen charity Sobell House.
So as they say “ A rough day at sea is better than any day in the office…
